Load capabilities and Applications
Free way, road and railroad embankments
Deep foundation, concentraded loads
Deep foundation, spread loads
- High strength columns in combination with a load transfer platform (surface stabilization or geo-grid system).
- MDM columns can be shorter as compared to driven piles for a given load.
- MDM columns can be tailor made (low strength/high strength) with same equipment.
- Industrial buildings/warehouses or multistory buildings.
- Loads of 150-400 kN (15-40 tons) per MDM column.
- Columns can be installed in blocks supporting up to 5000 kN (500 tons).
- Can replace precast concrete piles or micro piles.
- Piled slabs, with or without load transfer platform (surface stabilization or geo-grid).
- Loads of 150-400 kN (14-40 tons) per column.
- Economical alternative to Micro piles on larger projects.
Up-lift loads
Earthquake liquefaction mitigation
Levees
- Re-bars (large diameter), anchors or H-beams can easily be inserted into a MDM column during early hydration phase.
- Transfers great up-lift loads due to large surface for shaft resistance
- MDM can be sucessfylly used in earthquake liquefaction remediation applications where other methods may suffer from silty soil layers or to dry conditions.
- Existing levees (levee improvement) is the perfect application for MDM as it was originally thought of. i.e. to overcome dry sections (top of the levee) and adjust to the bottom (wet areas), all the while producing a uniform column.
- The MDM method is not dependent on water content of the soil for installation of competent columns, such as the dry method, yet MDM uses the same light weight, mobile equipment.
Contaminated soil remediation
High strength columns
Test methods
- MDM can be used to "lock" contaminants in place, without creating lagre amounts of spoil, that are hard and expensive to dispose of.
- MDM can be applied to dry or wet soils.
- Additives can be used to counteract contaminants, customized to any depth of the column.
- By adding the right amount of water at the right time together with the binder high strength columns can be produced in a very economical way.
- MDM columns with improved homogeniety and increased strength facilitates testing by internationally accepted methods.
- Core sampling.
- Wet grab sampling with MOSTAP sampler.
- Pressure meter testing.
- Extraction of complete columns.
Deep water ground table
Silty/Sandy soils
Hard/dry soils
- MDM can produce competent (designed) columns above the ground water table.
- MDM can produce high strength columns with improved homgenity.
- The added water facilitates the mechanical disaggregation which improves the mixing of binder, sil and water for e.g. stiff clays.
Construction-economical aspects
- In many cases MDM can provide a more economical solution by cutting installation time and reducing spoil compared to other methods.
- Consolidation time and settlement is reduced due to the high Young's modulus, thus reducing costly and time consuming preloading.
- MDM utilizes light, yet powerful equipment that is easily mobilized to, or within a job site, thus cutting down on mob costs and times.
