Kålsåsbanen is a part of Oslos western railroad system. It runs from Kolsås in Baerum to the city center of Oslo. The railroad is being upgraded to also handle subway trains.
As part of the upgrade, vibration dampening soil mix columns were installed directly under the tracks down to solid rock. The columns are high strenght and installed with the MDM method by Hercules Grundläggning AB.
The work was contracted in three stages and sections. Skanska Norge AS won the first section, PEAB and HAB Construction AS, the second and third sections respectively. Hercules performed the MDM installation as well as the regular Lime-Cement columns for all three contractors.
Part of the work was performed during the winter months. The Oslo area was subjected to extreme cold temperatures during this particular winter with temperatures as low as -40 F! This called for some ingenuity on the part of Hercules crew to keep the water from freezing during installation as well as during the night time.
